Le procédé SX/EX consiste à asperger (lixiviation) le minerai de cuivre, préalablement étendu sur une assise imperméable, d'une solution d'acide sulfurique. Puis, à l'aide d'un solvant organique, on enlève les impuretés (fer et autres) qui concentre le cuivre de 30 à 40 fois. On obtient ainsi une solution d'ions de cuivre [...] Finalement, la solution subit l'électrolyse, permettant d'agglutiner le métal rouge en une cathode d'une teneur de 99,99% en cuivre.
